Looking ahead to 2026

The Social Security Board of Trustees projects a 2.7% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2026.

That means the average monthly benefit could rise from $2,007 in 2025 to about $2,061 — an extra $54 per month or $648 for the year.

This boost will apply to:

  • Retired workers

  • Spousal and survivor beneficiaries

  • Disability and SSI recipients

The increase is percentage-based, so the impact varies.

For instance, a retiree earning $1,500/month could see about $40.50 more, while someone at the maximum benefit might receive roughly $137.92 extra.

The full retirement age (FRA) continues to rise gradually, and the taxable earnings cap will also increase, changes that shape your benefits outlook.
