State and Local Financial Assistance for 2026: Help for Seniors, Families, Single Parents and Homeowners

Financial assistance in the United States is not one national program with one application. Seniors, families, children, single parents and homeowners may qualify for help with food, cash assistance, utilities, child care, health coverage, housing and property taxes, but rules and applications vary by state.

The most reliable starting point is the USA.gov benefits finder, which helps people identify federal, state and local programs. You can also call 211 in many communities to find local rent, utility, food and emergency help.

National Programs Available in Every State

Before checking state-specific help, review these major programs. They are available nationwide, although income limits, benefit amounts and application processes are administered locally.

Senior-Specific Help to Check

Older adults should look beyond SNAP and Medicaid. Many states offer property-tax credits, senior rent or utility relief, prescription assistance, home-delivered meals and caregiver support.

Useful starting points include:

Help for Single Parents and Families

Single parents should apply for more than one program at the same time. A household may qualify for SNAP even if it does not qualify for TANF, and children may qualify for Medicaid or CHIP even when a parent does not qualify for Medicaid.

Programs include:

  • TANF for temporary cash assistance and work-support services.

  • WIC for nutrition support during pregnancy and early childhood.

  • Child Care and Development Fund for subsidized child care.

  • School meals for free or reduced-price meals at participating schools.

Homeowner and Utility Help

Homeowners facing high energy bills should apply for LIHEAP and weatherization assistance. These programs may help with heating and cooling costs, shutoff prevention, insulation, air sealing and heating-system repairs.

Homeowners behind on property taxes should contact their county treasurer or assessor. Many states offer homestead exemptions, senior property-tax freezes, deferral programs or tax-credit programs, but deadlines and eligibility rules vary.
